1st porn app on iTunes 'sold out'

Apple recently updated its OS 3.0 iPhone software to include parental controls that restrict some applications to people over a certain age. (Canadian Press)

The first app featuring images of nude women to go up for sale on iTunes can no longer be downloaded because it was too popular, the developer reported Thursday.

"The Hottest Girls app is temporarily sold out," said a post signed by the "ATG dev team" on the website of developer Allen Leung.

They added that the servers distributing the app were crashing due to high usage. However, they noted that those who have already downloaded the app will be able to use it, and assured customers that "the topless images will still be there when it is sold again."

"Hottest Girls," which billed itself on the developer's website as the "first and only app with nudity," was updated Wednesday to include "completely naked pics," according to the description at the iTunes store. It is available for download to customers 17 or older to run on the iPhone and the iPod touch.

Previously, Apple would not approve that kind of material for sale on iTunes.

However, Apple updated its OS 3.0 iPhone software this month to include parental controls that restrict some applications to people over a certain age. That led to widespread speculation online at sites such as MacRumors.com that the door would soon be open to porn.

The "Hottest Girls" application for the iPhone and iPod touch costs $1.99 and boasts more than 2,000 photos of "hand-picked images of the finest looking girls" that are automatically updated. A previous version of the app, released in May, contained scantily clad women, but none who were naked.

At least one online review, however, said even the new, nude images are relatively tame.

Wired News columnist Charlie Sorrel called them "distinctly softcore."

"While there are nipples to be seen, that's about it," he wrote on the magazine's Gadget Lab website. "A smartly worded Google image search would do better if you're looking for titillation."

Confusion for developers?

Nigel Wallis, director of software and services for IDC Canada, a research company that analyzes the technology industry, said Apple's decision to allow explicit apps on iTunes means it has a lot of faith in its new parental controls.

"Apple cares a lot about their brand," he added. "It's an exceedingly large part of the company's worth."

Presumably, he said, the company thinks adult-oriented apps could be a huge potential market and a source of large revenues.

Wallis noted that Apple has banned a number of other applications in recent months that could potentially tarnish its image, such as one from the band Nine Inch Nails and another featuring the South Park cartoon. In April, the company also pulled the plug on the "Baby Shaker" application, which prompted numerous complaints. The app let users shut off the sound of a crying baby with a vigorous shake.

Given its recent track record, the decision to allow adult apps may confuse developers, Wallis said.

"It would be nice to have a bit more clarification from Apple in terms of what's in, what's out."

Apple iPhone 3GS, A Flawed Phone?

Hot handsets aren't the only problems Apple is facing with its latest batch of iPhones.

Yesterday, reports surfaced of overheating iPhone 3G S models, along with one photo of a pinkish brown hue around the back of a white phone. Now, iPhone Faq reports problems with the iPhone OS 3.0 as well.

Icons are reportedly sometimes disappearing or representing the wrong application. That's not as catastrophic as a lightly baked piece of technology, but it's certainly a nuisance for a gadget promoted for ease of use.

The iPhone FAQ suggests a couple of fixes. One involves removing the offending Apps and reinstalling them through iTunes. Resetting iPhone settings could also do the trick (by navigating to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings). If all else fails, a system restore may be necessary.

Some users have also reported short battery life in the 3GS, though it's possible they're just getting a little too comfortable with phone's more hardware-intensive uses, such as gaming. Apple has released an application allowing owners to monitor the problem.

As for the overheating issue, Apple has remained silent since the news broke. It's possible that reports of discoloration are overblown, as no other reports have emerged with evidence, but there's no shortage of users saying the phone at least gets hot to the touch. In the past, Apple has been able to fix hot hardware with firmware updates, at least for its computers. With more than a million 3GS phones sold, a fix may be that simple. Otherwise, we're looking at a wave of returns.

With all this in mind, can the iPhone 3GS be considered broken? Probably not. Keep in mind that the Palm Pre suffered similar glitches at launch and Research in Motion once dealt with overheating and other issues in its Blackberry Bold. For now, chalk this one up as another plight of the early adopter.

Update: Apple Pulls 'Hottest Girls' Porn App from iTunes

Apple has apparently changed its mind about allowing applications with explicit content in the iPhone App Store. After approving earlier today the first app featuring photos of nude women, Apple has now removed "Hottest Girls" from the App Store.

UPDATE: It appears Apple has not banned "Hottest Girls" application. The app developer claims in a note on his site that the application is "sold out" due to a strain on the servers. "Hottest Girls" loads the images it displays from the developer's servers and the "popularity of this app" could crash them, he says.

The developer claims he asked Apple to temporarily suspend the sales of this app until the problem is solved. Those who already purchased the application will still be able to use it, the message to his site says.

The rating and parental controls system introduced with the iPhone 3.0 software update opened a new door for explicit content publishers. The first one to get approved by Apple was "Hottest Girls" ($1.99) this morning, which also got people talking about how appropriate this move was.

But Apple appears to have wasted little time, and quickly removed "Hottest Girls" from the App Store, hours after approving the application. The explicit content app was rated as 17+ for "Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity" and "Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes".

Note: Other 17+ rated applications are still available from the Apple App Store at the moment, and only "Hottest Girls" seems to be blocked specifically.

The new iPhone's video capability has already seen a bump in YouTube mobile uploads.

The number of videos filmed on mobile phones uploaded to YouTube has risen 400 per cent since last week, following the release of Apple's iPhone 3GS.

The device, newly fitted with video recording technology, allows users to upload their videos wirelessly to the YouTube over 3G phone networks.

The increase comes as part of a trend towards mobile devices being equipped with video uploading and sharing facilities which has seen 17 times more mobile phone footage uploaded to YouTube in comparison to six months ago.

The increase in uploads is not believed to worry YouTube, which already sees more than 20 hours of content uploaded every minute, from a variety of sources.

Though less widespread, Android phones such as the T Mobile G1 and Vodafone HTC Magic are also capable of performing the same function.

Video sharing is made straightforward on all formats by the integration of social media features with YouTube, allowing users to show content they've uploaded using social networks such as Facebook and microblogging service Twitter.

iPhone Hackers Jailbreak OS 3.0 Software

A band of phone crackers called the iPhone Dev Team has released software which will enable non-Apple-approved apps to be loaded onto the handset.

The iPhone Dev Team is at it again, and the group of hackers has released software that enables iPhone 3.0 users to install non-App Store programs on their device.

This software is called Ultrasn0w, and it "jailbreaks" the device by removing Apple's software controls that prohibit independent applications from being installed. The Dev Team is also responsible for creating software that enables iPhone owners to unlock the handset and take it to any GSM carrier.

It is unclear if this software will gain a wide audience because many of the original advantages to a jailbroken device have faded away. Users could unlock the iPhone to use T-Mobile's service, but the iPhone 3G wouldn't be able to access the network's 3G network because the smartphone is not designed for T-Mobile's spectrum.

Users will be able to find a wider variety of apps with the jailbreak software though, as developers won't have to pass Apple's relatively-strict vetting process. This means users will be able to download live-streaming apps like Qik, as well as download apps that can run in the background.

But the appeal of these non-approved apps may be waning, as the 3.0 firmware gives developers more than 1,000 new hooks into the hardware. While there are a few alternative iPhone app stores, most developers will look at the App Store as the main means of distribution because it has an audience of more than 40 million iPhone and iPod Touch users.

The jailbreaking and unlocking software do not currently work with the iPhone 3GS, the Dev Team said. The group said the software should be available soon because the touch-screen smartphone is vulnerable to an exploit that is present in the second-generation iPod Touch.

There will soon be a cheaper iPhone that costs only $99. While the phone itself is the same entry-level model that ignited sales last summer, though, it will have new software.

Among the software's improvements are support for cut, copy and paste; voice recording; and sending photos from phone to phone using a system called Multimedia Messaging Service.

The new software even adds a feature that lets you transmit stereo music wirelessly using Bluetooth.

The iPhone still can't run more than one program at a time, but Apple will enable a notification system that can tell you, for example, if someone has sent you an instant message.

Apple is not the first company to launch a $99 smartphone. Just last year, Palm had success selling the Centro for that price. But the Centro had old software that was on the verge of being phased out.

iPhone 3.0 Software: AT&T now supports Wi-Fi ‘auto-authentication’

It is being reported that AT&T have announced some exiting news for existing and future iPhone owners. 9to5Mac explains that AT&T now supports Wi-Fi “auto-authentication, this new feature has been made possible with the release of the new Apple iPhone 3.0 OS, which went live yesterday, July 17, 2009.

AT&T iPhone customers have had access to 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots, but connecting to them became a bit of a chore, as there were two steps that you had to go through using SMS. The new system will do away with that process.

The new feature, Auto-authentication will now allow your iPhone to switch from AT&T’s 3G network to its Wi-Fi Hot Spot that is being prompted seamlessly. Those iPhone customers with unlimited data plans on AT&T will now have easier access to the largest Wi-Fi network in the U.S.

How to Avoid Paying the iPhone 3GS Upgrade Tax

Those tears of joy shed by iPhone loyalists are turning into cries of grief with the announcement by AT&T that it will impose a $200 fee to upgrade to the next-generation iPhone, which lands in stores Friday.

For iPhone 3G users who are not eligible for subsidized pricing, the upgrade “tax” brings the grand total to not $200 or $300 — but a hefty $400 or $500 for the iPhone 3GS, depending on the model (16GB or 32GB, respectively).

But tech geeks and criminal masterminds share one philosophy: They understand there’s a way around everything. You don’t have to pay that extra fee, iPhone 3G customers. Here are a few quick, painless methods to shave off that $200.

Sell your iPhone 3G to Gazelle

Gazelle, an e-junk trader, is offering $200 to $300 for used iPhone 3G handsets, depending on their condition. The site makes it extremely easy to sell your iPhone: Just enter “iPhone 3G” in the search bar, select your model, click “Sell it now,” rate the condition of the phone, mention which of the included accessories you still have and then click “Calculate.” Then, Gazelle will give you an estimate. As you can see in the screenshot above, a 16GB iPhone 3G in perfect condition, including accessories and the instruction manual, will sell for $232. Not bad!

From there on, Gazelle will send you a shipping label to print out. Then you’d pack your iPhone in a box, slap the shipping label onto it, drop the package at a UPS location and wait for payment. Oh, and it gets better — this week you get an extra 10 percent for your iPhone if you use the coupon code “iPhone.” Pretty sweet, huh?

I sold my first-generation MacBook Pro through the site, and I got a pretty good deal. I procrastinated on shipping it out, and Gazelle even sent me a notebook-friendly box to ship it in. After dropping off my MacBook Pro at UPS, I received the promised payment within a week. (If you lie about the product’s condition, of course they’ll dock some dollars off the provided estimate.)

Unlock your iPhone 3G and sell it on Craigslist
This is a pretty obvious option: Stick an ad on Craigslist asking for a reasonable price for your iPhone 3G. Don’t expect much from AT&T customers, though, since Apple is still selling the iPhone 3G for a new low price of $100. Your target market is non-AT&T customers who have intentions to Jailbreak and unlock the iPhone to work with their carrier.

Want to add value to your used iPhone 3G? Jailbreak and unlock the thing yourself, before you put it on Craigslist. To figure out how to do that, visit the Dev-Team Blog, where a group of hackers is providing all the instructions and tools to stick it to the man.

Pay the early termination fee
We’re listing this trick last because it’s the least beneficial. You pay a fee to cancel your AT&T account before the two-year contract is up. Here’s the kicker: The fee is pro-rated; Each month AT&T shaves $5 off your termination fee. That means if you bought the iPhone 3G when it hit stores in July 2008, you’ll be paying $120 rather than the initial $175 termination fee ($175 - $55 = $120). Then, you start a new AT&T contract with a new iPhone 3GS.

With this method, after adding the $120 and the $18 account setup fee, the total for the 16GB iPhone 3GS comes to about $340. That’s $60 less than you’d have to pay normally. The cons: You’re committing to yet another two-year contract with AT&T; sometimes early cancellation is subject to extra fees and a new number, according to Cult of Mac.

Not ideal — and what are you going to do with an extra iPhone lying around anyway? Just sell it with one of the tips listed above.

Based on UPS tracking - it’s currently in Alaska - I’m saying ‘yes’, but Apple’s initial email notification said that it would arrive by June 22nd, well behind the official launch date.
